A Joyous Glance at ACSI Musicale 2010
Written by Kendra Corman, Choir President 2009-10
This was quite a year for our own Whittier Christian High School Choir at the ACSI Musicale! An annual highlight for our choir students, the two-day choral festival at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena this year consisted of 20 participating Christian high schools. That’s about 700 students!
Throughout the two days, the choirs spent their time either practicing all together with the guest conductor Timothy Sawyer, the Director of Choral Activities at Northwestern College in Minnesota, or being adjudicated by a musical expert as soloists, small and large ensembles, and large choirs. The goal of these evaluations is not only to receive valuable advice and grow as musicians but also to be selected to perform at the Command Performance on the second night. Although set in a competitive atmosphere, ACSI’s goal is above all to bring glory to the Lord as a limited number of groups and soloists are selected.
This year, Whittier Christian High School was extremely well-represented. Three soloists made it to runoffs (Musicale lingo for call-backs): Melanie Cuevas, Lindsay Foregger, and Amy Schneeberger. For the Command Performance, Melanie was chosen to sing her gospel solo “Redeemer,” Small Ensemble Harmony was selected to sing their classical piece “Psalm 100,” and Large Ensemble Vada e Canti was chosen to sing “Go Where I Send Thee.” In addition, Lindsay Foregger and Paul Hoffman made it into the triple trio (yes, it is what it sounds like: an ensemble made up of three trios) that was featured in a classical piece performed by all the choirs put together. Also, Andrea Adereti received the privilege of being a narrator, reciting a verse from Scripture before one of the mass choir songs.
Mrs. Holtom and all of the Choir students are pleased to have been so blessed and honored at this year’s Musicale, and are now gearing up for “Off-Broadway: The Best of Broadway” coming in May!
