November 2009
HONORING OUR VETERANS

On Tuesday, November 10, Whittier Christian High School held its annual Veterans’ Day assembly. This tradition was begun to increase student understanding of the holiday’s significance, but the assembly also offers students and families an opportunity to honor relatives and friends who have served our country through the military. Students are encouraged to invite relatives to attend the assembly, and this year over 40 guests joined us for a time of thanks and remembrance. Veterans in attendance ranged from those who participated in WWII combat to those who have served recently in Afghanistan. The WCHS vocal ensemble and concert band provided the soundtrack for the assembly with patriotic songs and a medley of military hymns. The featured speaker was Specialist 5 th Class, Craig Wright, a Viet Nam veteran. For his service with the first American unit to enter Cambodia, Mr. Wright received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and a recent Presidential Unit Citation given at the White House. After the assembly, light refreshments were provided for the veterans and their families.
