IG Alumni Spotlight – Ryan McGuyre

February 4, 2022 by Cindi Morrison

Year Graduated?
1994

What were you involved in @ WC?
Basketball; Volleyball; NHS, and did a couple Missions trips. Right after graduating I started coaching at WCHS, both volleyball and basketball. I was also a WCHS P.E. Teacher and taught US History and Government/Economics for a time.

Favorite Teacher?
Mr. Chandler was a great teacher and Miss Turner was incredibly loyal (she did VB stats for our games for a long time). Mr. Davis was a great Bible teacher. Miss Sawyer/Mrs. Naughton was not my favorite or a teacher I was close with, but she showed me a beautiful side of grace at a time during my senior year that maybe saved my life. I was in a dark place and her grace is by far my most cherished memory and has impacted me and how I see and treat others when they are struggling or going through a tough time.

Favorite High School Memory?
Racing my teammates to practices in my 64 ½ Mustang. Winning CIF my Junior year of VB and being Basketball Conference Champs Senior year. Going to Ruby’s after football games with friends.

What are you up to now?
Head Volleyball Coach at Baylor University

Highlight the past 5 years?
2019 Conference Champs for Baylor for first time in history, first time to make the Final Four, Named 2019 NCAA DI National Coach of Year and had a player named 2019 National Player of Year.

Family Life?
Happily Married to Jennifer McGuyre (Calvary Chapel alum), 3 kids – Tryston 17, Kitana 15, Ryder 12

What did you take away from WC?
A lot of incredible learning from incredible people who made incredible sacrifices. Many timeless values were planted in my heart because of WCHS.

Then to get a little deeper:

What pieces of advice would you give WCHS students today?
Let your identity come from the Lord. You are His child and He loves you no matter what. Be willing to listen to those that love you and know you. Seek out those who are hurting and remind them of the gifts and talents God has given them. Surround yourself with people that are grateful and can point you towards hope.

What do you wish your current student athletes knew/understood? “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.” – It starts with God, our Creator. Trust in His plan for you.

What role does faith play in your life today?
Hopefully it is intertwined in all that I do. The daily challenge is to remain in Him and let Him reign in me.
What is the most recent thing that God is teaching you? Our reward is the enjoyment and peace that comes from doing God’s will, whatever that job may be.
